Department of
Reproduction and Artificial Insemination
The Department of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination has been operating under the Clinical Sciences since the establishment of our faculty. At present, the department is staffed by one full professor who leads both academic and research activities. Since its foundation, the department has made significant contributions to the field of animal reproduction in Türkiye through its educational programs, scientific research, and practical applications. In this context, the development and advancement of artificial insemination techniques constitute one of our primary objectives. Within the scope of the theoretical training provided to 5th-year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the following subjects are covered: Andrological Examination, Reproductive Endocrinology, Physiology of Reproduction, Estrus Synchronization, Semen Collection, Preservation, and Evaluation, Artificial Insemination Techniques in Domestic Animals, Infertility and Factors Affecting Fertility, Advanced Reproductive Technologies, Practical training is carried out as part of clinical practice and internship programs, particularly at the sheep farm affiliated with the university's Livestock Research and Application Center. Additionally, rectal examination training is provided at slaughterhouses. Our department also supports the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology by contributing to graduate (Master's and PhD) education. The Semen Analysis Laboratory, operating within our department, offers services such as spermatological examinations for male animals and the preparation of semen analysis reports. Furthermore, frozen bull semen samples brought in by regional veterinarians and certain commercial companies are routinely evaluated in our laboratory.
In collaboration with the Balıkesir Veterinary Medical Association, regular training courses titled "Artificial Insemination in Cattle Using the Recto-Vaginal Method" are organized for veterinarians. These courses provide both theoretical knowledge and practical training. The same courses are periodically offered to graduate and newly graduated veterinarians. In recent years, the department has initiated scientific studies aimed at generating data in the field of feline reproduction. Additionally, in collaboration with industry partners, research projects have been conducted on embryo transfer in cattle.
One of the department’s strategic priorities is the genetic improvement
of local livestock breeds through the application of biotechnological
approaches, including gamete cryobiology, in vitro embryo production (IVP), and
embryo transfer. The Department of
Reproduction and Artificial Insemination aims to conduct scientific research
projects—both nationally and internationally—in the fields of andrology,
reproduction, in-vitro fertilization, and cryobiology across ruminants,
equines, and companion animals.
